Posted on: November 5, 2019[ARCHIVED] Police Host Successful Drug Take-Back Day Event
Westmont, Illinois
Date Issued: November 5, 2019
On Saturday, October 26, the Westmont Police Department hosted two drug take-back events as part of the National DEA-sponsored Drug Take-Back Day. Thank you to Mariano’s volunteers for assisting officers at this event. The program took in a total of 255 pounds of unwanted medication, from both locations.
Drug take-back programs focus on collecting unwanted, unused, and expired prescription drugs. Pills, powders, and patches.
People can drop off used needles at the Westmont Police Department collection site during business hours located at 500 N Cass Ave. All needles must be secured in a Sharps container.
To learn about how to safely dispose of radioactive medicines, liquids, creams, inhalers, or EpiPens, the DuPage County Health Department has helpful resources available at http://www.dupagehealth.org/rxbox.
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, nearly 54 percent of those who misused prescription drugs obtained them from a friend or relative. The Geisinger Center for Health Research found that only about 11 percent of unused medication is disposed of properly. Further, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends the need for improved consumer access to convenient and year-round drug take-back opportunities to reduce the amount of unused medications available for misuse.
For more information regarding Westmont’s participation in this program, contact Deputy Chief Stephen Thompson at sthompson@westmont.il.gov or call 630-981-6371.
