[ARCHIVED] Waste Management COVID-19 Update - Call Centers Open, Schedules Maintained, More

Westmont, Illinois
Date Issued: April 7, 2020

At present, Waste Management (WM) is maintaining its typical collection schedule for trash and recycling.  However, collection pick-up times may vary week to week and residents should wait until the end of the business day before reporting a missed pick-up.  If your trash and/or recycling is not picked up by the end of the day, please contact WM at wm.com or 800-964-8988.

PUT OUT CARTS THE NIGHT BEFORE
To help ensure that your trash and recycling is picked up on your scheduled day, it is strongly encouraged that residents put their carts and yard waste out the night before your service day.

WM CALL CENTERS OPEN
The WM call center agents have transitioned to work-from-home and are now open.  Please note that you may experience longer wait times due to a higher than usual call volume.  If you need to contact WM regarding service issues, please call 800-964-8988.  For the most up-to-date service information, please visit wm.com/alerts

FREE LEAF COLLECTION APRIL 13-17
The Village of Westmont and WM is offering free leaf collection during the second full week of April.  Starting Monday, April 13, and running through Friday, April 17, residents can put out unlimited kraft paper bags of leaves free of charge next to their garbage on their scheduled garbage pick-up day.  Only kraft paper yard waste bags can be used for this free program.  This program is for leaves only - grass clippings and other yard waste must be put in separate kraft bags and have a yard waste sticker placed on each bag or container.

YARD WASTE AND BRUSH PICK-UP PROGRAM
Yard waste, which is typically grass clippings and leaves, must be placed in kraft paper bags or a container that is 32 gallons or less clearly marked "YARD WASTE".  Each yard waste container or kraft bag MUST have a yard waste sticker, which is green in color, placed on them.  There is no limit to the number of containers or bags you can place out for pick-up on your regular service day, but each bag or container must have a yard waste sticker attached.  Place yard waste next to your garbage cans on the same day as your regular garbage service day.

WM also provides a weekly brush pick-up program that coincides with the Yard Waste Collection Program. Branches and tree limbs MUST be tied with natural twine into bundles no more than 4 feet long and 1 1/2 feet in diameter.  Each bundle must weigh less than fifty (50) pounds.  Trees, stumps, and branches larger than 4 inches in diameter cannot be collected as brush.  Brush should be placed next to your other refuse on your usual pick-up day.  No sticker is required for brush pick-up.

BULK ITEM PROGRAM SUSPENDED
Due to circumstances related to the COVID-19 response, WM has temporarily suspended its large/bulky item pick-up service.  This suspension includes both the free weekly program and the special call-in program.  Large items, such as mattresses, furniture, etc., should NOT be placed alongside your garbage carts for pick-up at this time.  The service will remain suspended until further notice.  However, additional bags or cans of garbage, less than 45 pounds, can be put out for collection as long as each item has a sticker.

DISPOSAL OF COVID-19 ITEMS
WM crews need our help to ensure they remain safe and the recycling stream remains clean.  Crews are seeing COVID-19 personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks, eyeglasses, and gowns in the wrong bins.  These items can NOT be recycled and must be placed in the trash.  Also not recyclable are cleaning supplies like disposable wipes, paper towels, tissues.  These items have never been recyclable.  The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that items possibly contaminated with the COVID-19 virus be discarded immediately in a trash bin with a lid and then wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

For more information, contact WM at www.wm.com or 1-800-964-8988.
