Date Issued: June 3, 2020
On June 3, 2020, the Westmont Fire Department received a call at 11:56 a.m. for smoke investigation at 534 S. Adams Street. Westmont Police arrived on location to confirm smoke was coming out of the house and Fire Department crews were on the scene at 12:00 p.m. and began immediate fire suppression. It appears the fire started on the first floor of the tri-level residential structure. Upon entering the home, crews found a male in his 50’s at the top of the stairs who was unresponsive and had sustained 2nd degree burns and apparent smoke inhalation. The man was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital where the victim was pronounced deceased.
The fire was fully extinguished at 12:24 p.m. No other victims were found. Property damage was contained to 534 S. Adams and there were no exposures to adjoining properties. Neighbors told fire personnel that there was smoke in the air for up to 30 minutes before the 9-1-1 call.
At this time, the fire is being investigated by the Dupage County Task Force, the Westmont Police Department, and the Office of the State Fire Marshal, which is typical protocol when there is a fire fatality. The cause of the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature. No additional information is available at this time.
