[ARCHIVED] National Suicide Prevention & Action Month Proclamation

Westmont, Illinois
Date Issued: September 10,  2020

Today, Thursday, September 10, 2020 is National Suicide Prevention Day.  Last month, the Village of Westmont approved a National Suicide Prevention and Action Month Proclamation (NSPAMP) to bring attention to this serious issue. Through the public discussion of this difficult topic, our entire community, including our elected and appointed officials, village employees, first responders, and our residents, is reminded of the importance of breaking the silence of the stigma surrounding mental health.

The goal of the proclamation is to make sure that the public is aware that suicide is an important issue, raise the visibility of available suicide prevention resources, and encourage others to be available to those around them by learning how to discuss suicide without increasing the risk of harm.

The Village of Westmont has partnered with Hope For The Day, a not for profit organization committed to raising awareness regarding the importance of positive mental health, on several projects including the recent Community HOPE Collage initiative.  HFTD encourages people to understand and remember the slogan “It’s OK not to be OK” and to seek help when needed.

If you or someone you know needs help, please visit https://www.hftd.org/find-help and type in your zip code for a list of vetted social services including local mental health resources in our community.  To learn more about NSPAMP website.
