[ARCHIVED] Dementia Friendly Updates

Dementia Friendly Logo

Westmont, Illinois -- Date Issued: May 14, 2021

As part of being a dementia friendly village, we are informing our residents of an upcoming informative webinar on May 21 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. which will discuss the topic of creating a dementia-friendly home. The webinar hosted by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA), is for caregivers and professionals. It will talk about how almost every part of a home can impact quality of life for someone living with a dementia-related illness—even seemingly cosmetic choices like paint colors, patterns, and dishware can make a difference.

AFA created ‘The Apartment’, a full-scale model studio residence built in its offices, to showcase steps families can take to make their homes more dementia-friendly. The AFA webinar will include a virtual tour of The Apartment and view its features regarding how you can make dementia-friendly adaptations in your own home.

Become a Dementia Friend Today
Become a Dementia Friend by signing up online. As a Dementia Friend, you learn about this worldwide movement, what it means to live with dementia, and the simple things you can do to provide support. Dementia Friends are asked to turn their new understanding of dementia into a practical action that can help someone living in their community. The action can be big or small — every action counts!  For each new Dementia Friend, donations will be made to the Longest Day Event for the Illinois Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Dementia-Friendly Westmont
The Village of Westmont became the first official Dementia Friendly Community in DuPage County. The status confirms that Westmont has taken specific steps to train staff and provide resources so that we can better serve and accommodate people with dementia and their caregivers. Village of Westmont departments, including Police and Fire, along with the Westmont Library, Park District, the Westmont Chamber of Commerce, and other public agencies all participated in the process and completed dementia awareness training. To assist residents, Dementia Friendly Westmont has developed a dementia friendly resource brochure that features contact information for local resources.
