Westmont, Illinois -- Date Issued: July 1, 2021
On June 30 at the Woodridge Village Hall, Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter and the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference (DMMC) participated in a forum regarding the recent emergency response from last weekend’s tornado. The forum, initiated by U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth and hosted by the Village of Woodridge, featured direct input from Mayors of Woodridge, Darien, and Naperville, all of which were greatly impacted by the recent tornado.
“When Senator Duckworth reached out to meet with the mayors and managers of the Conference, we felt it would be important for the Mayors of the communities most affected by last week’s tornado to get together and share their experiences so that we can continue to evolve best practices during emergencies,” said Mayor Gunter, who is the President of the DMMC. “We definitely learned that within DuPage County, our local governments greatly support one another as there were many stories of beneficial mutual aid from communities that were not as affected. It was an honor to have Senator Duckworth participate in the conversation. We appreciate her willingness to bring our concerns and requests back to congress.”
During the meeting, Duckworth discussed her support for federal funding of local infrastructure projects that would benefit Illinois and the Chicagoland area. Specifically, Duckworth talked about the importance of replacing lead water distribution services as well as improving water sanitation services. She stated that Illinois makes up more than 20% of the country’s lead water services and that we need to act on this to prevent a water service disaster such as what occurred in Flint, Michigan.
The DMMC represents more than one million residents in its mission to advocate for sound public policy initiatives that benefit the interest of local municipal governments while fostering an atmosphere of intergovernmental cooperation.
