Westmont, Illinois - Date Issued: October 6, 2021
The Westmont Environmental Improvement Committee (EIC) is hosting a Pumpkin Composting event on Nov. 6 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Westmont Public Library, 428 N. Cass Avenue. All pumpkins MUST be cleaned free of inorganic materials such as candles and other decorations prior to being disposed in the composting collection container.
“Westmont has held a pumpkin composting event for many years, and we were the first to promote it with a pumpkin smashing publicity campaign,” said EIC Chair Bruce Barker. "This is an important environmental initiative. Composting your pumpkin saves landfill space, hundreds of gallons of water, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and puts essential nutrients back into the soil. We encourage everyone to go green for Halloween and compost your pumpkin.”
The Pumpkin Smashing Extravaganza (PSE) will be held on October 23 in downtown Westmont as part of the Wicked West Fest events. The purpose of the PSE is to raise awareness of after-Halloween pumpkin recycling opportunities.
