April Is National Safe Digging Month and JULIE, Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators, wants to remind everyone to call 811 before you dig or do any excavation of any kind. JULIE, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to keeping Illinois safe and connected. The goal of this initiative is to reduce the risk of striking underground utility lines and potentially causing environmental or property damage, costly delays or personal injury. This is a FREE service.
“The importance of calling 811 before you dig cannot be overstated,” said Westmont Building Commissioner Jason Vitell. “By calling 811 and letting them know where you plan to dig, excavate, or place a post, they will check the location of the intended work to try to make sure there is no threat of damaging underground utility lines so that your project can be completed safely.”

Avoid Damage Risk While Digging
Nationwide, more than 49.3 million Americans will put themselves, their families and their communities at risk by not contacting their local 811 Center before digging. As Illinois’ FREE notification service to prevent underground utility line damages, JULIE is dedicated to keeping homeowners, landscapers, contractors, professional excavators…and the entire community…safe. Underground utility lines are unintentionally damaged at the rate of once per minute. Homeowners and professional excavators who fail to notify JULIE or other state one-call centers before digging cause approximately 40 percent of all damages, making it the top cause of these dangerous and costly incidents. This statistic jumps to 60 percent for landscaping and fence-building projects.
