[ARCHIVED] Village Will Not Renew Electric Aggregation Contract

Village of Westmont
Date Issued: June 13, 2014

The Village of Westmont has decided to not renew the current electric supply aggregation contract with FirstEnergy. After several meetings discussing the topic with the Village of Downers Grove, it was determined that there is no longer a significant cost savings for the community by pursuing an aggregate contract.

“When we entered into this process of establishing electric aggregation a two years ago, we had two main goals,” says Village Manager Ron Searl. “First and foremost, our goal was to achieve a better electric supply rate for the community, thus saving money for our residents. Additionally, this process has hopefully provided awareness that citizens have choice in selecting an electric supply company. Prior to this initiative, many people believed that ComEd was the only electric supply option available to them.”

When the current contract expires in August, electric supply will automatically return to whatever electricity producer ComEd has under contract. ComEd's rate for October 2014-May 2015 will be 7.42 cents per kilowatt hour, plus an additional adjustment capped at .5 cents per kilowatt, which will vary each month. This rate is determined by the Illinois Power Agency, a State of Illinois agency that purchases power supply for ComEd.

Residents will not need to take any action for this to happen and there is no threat of residents losing electric service during this transition. However, residents will be able to seek other electric supply vendors on their own initiative.
