The Village of Westmont hopes everyone has a fun and SAFE New Year’s Celebration. Following are some safety tips to keep in mind:
DRINKING
* Be sure to monitor your alcohol consumption. A celebration does not necessitate drunkenness.
Never leave your drink unattended. If you have to leave the table, either take your drink with you or make sure a trusted friend is keeping watch on it. It only takes a second for someone to add something to your drink that could make the rest of your evening dangerous.
* When you are popping champagne bottles, aim the cork away from people. This may sound funny, however, it can be a serious issue.
DRIVING
* DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE! Even if you’ve had only a couple of drinks, have a designated driver who is sober drive you around. To avoid problems with accidents and the law, make sure your driver is alcohol free for the night.
* Even if you are driving sober, you still need to be mindful of other motorists on the road who are possibly driving intoxicated, or pedestrians who have maybe had too much to drink. When driving, be alert of your surroundings to avoid potential accidents.
* Be aware that law enforcement will be out and present to address safety concerns.
PUBLIC EVENTS
* Be aware of your surroundings at all times. You could find yourself in the middle of another person's bad decision if you are not aware of what’s going on around you.
* Be sure to go to events with a friend for the night. Going out alone invites additional problems.
* Keep your phone or other communication device close and CHARGED so that you can call for help if needed.
* Pay attention to where the exits are at the event you’re attending.
NO FIREWORKS OR DISCHARGE OF FIREARMS
* Use of fireworks and the discharge of firearms in the Village is illegal and unsafe. Please leave fireworks and midnight celebrations to the professionals.
FRIENDS
* Be sure to have a friend with you for the entire night. Always stay in groups. Do not go anywhere by yourself.
PET SAFETY
* Fireworks, loud noises, and large groups of people can be very upsetting and unsafe for pets. Leave your pets at home where they will be safe.
Of course, if you need to report an emergency situation or safety issue, do not hesitate, call 9-1-1 immediately.
