[ARCHIVED] Village Introduces “Friendly Reminder” Notifications For Code Enforcement

Village of Westmont
Issued: April 2, 2015

“Everyone supports the general concept that citizens need to keep their properties and neighborhoods safe and well maintained,” says Village Trustee and Community Development Committee Chair Bruce Barker, “however, it still can be difficult to receive any notification from the Village that points out areas of improvement and code violations. With that in mind, our Code Enforcement team is introducing our new ‘Friendly Reminders’ notifications.”

The ‘Friendly Reminder’ notifications are part of the Westmont First Neighborhood Pride Program that encourages all residents and business owners to be proactive in maintaining their properties as well as alleys and parkways adjacent to their property. Walking along neighborhood streets and alleys, the Village Code Enforcement team will perform random neighborhood inspections and take notes regarding what they find. In most cases, staff will leave a “Friendly Reminder” on the front door of the address letting the homeowner know if any code enforcement concerns need to be addressed. Code Enforcement will then schedule a return visit and compliance inspection. If the violation has not been addressed, then the issue may result in an official citation.

The ‘Friendly Reminder’ notices will begin immediately and continue through the end of April. Approximately May 1, there will be increased enforcement of Village Codes.

“We understand that everyone gets busy, but keeping your property safe and well-maintained demonstrates respect for your neighbors and the entire community,” says Nick Weinert, Acting Village Building Commissioner. “This type of program has been identified as one of the most effective measures available to Village Government which protects property values, prevents blight, and maintains the quality of our residential neighborhoods. It is our goal to be proactive and provide education regarding property maintenance and code enforcement. Of course, depending on the situation, especially in regards to safety concerns, citations will be issued.”
