“Our Environmental Improvement Commission (EIC) is barely a year old, and they are doing a great job,” says Westmont EIC Staff Liaison Larry McIntyre. “They’ve been very ambitious. We’re excited about all of the programs they have coordinated for Westmont Earth Month.”
Westmont Earth Month will consist of 4 weeks of special activities beginning on Earth Day, April 22. “We want to thank the Westmont Library and the Westmont Police Department for partnering with us on these events,” says EIC Chair Aaron Spencer. Following is the Westmont Earth Month schedule of events:
EVENT: WESTMONT EARTH DAY/EARTH MONTH KICKOFFApril 22 - Westmont Library, 428 N. Cass
The Westmont Environmental Improvement Commission and Westmont Public Library have joined forces to create a month of "Green" activities in Westmont. Westmont EARTH MONTH will kick off on Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22 at the Westmont Library, and continue through Saturday, May 16. We invite the entire community to participate. The Library will have seed give-aways and information regarding the Village’s Rain Barrel Program.
EVENT: ARBOR DAY EVENT AT MILLER SCHOOLApril 24, 10am - Miller School
On Arbor Day, Village Forester Jon Yeater will continue his annual program in which the Village plants a tree at one of our area schools to promote the importance of trees in our ecology. For more information, contact the Village at email@example.com.
PRESENTATION: HOW TO SAVE MONEY WITH ENERGY EFFICIENCYMay 2, 10:30a-Noon - Westmont Library, 428 N. Cass, 2nd Floor Meeting Room
The Westmont Environmental Improvement Commission and the Westmont Public Library will host a presentation by SCARCE which will provide real strategies in which people can SAVE MONEY by being energy efficient in their homes. RECYCLING EVENT: SPECIAL OLYMPICS PAPER SHREDDING FUNDRAISER & FLUORESCENT BULB RECYCLING EVENTMay 9, 9a-Noon - Westmont Police-Fire Facility, 500 N. Cass
Hosted by the Westmont Police Department and sponsored by Docu-Shred, docu-shredinc.com, this paper-shredding event will be a fundraiser for Special Olympics Illinois. Participants are asked to make a $5 donation for each box of paper to be shredded. Banker boxes and similar sizes are preferred. There is a 5 box limit per person. For more information, contact Sgt. Brian Gruen at email@example.com. Also as part of this event, the Village’s Environmental Improvement Commission will be working with Waste Management to provide fluorescent bulb recycling. Westmont Public Works Director and SCARCE will make a presentation regarding the importance of water conservation. RECYCLING EVENT: DOWNERS GROVE TOWNSHIP ELECTRONICS RECYCLING PROGRAMMay 16, 8a-Noon - DG Township Hwy Dept. Facility, 318 E. Quincy Street
The Village of Westmont partners with the Downers Grove Township to promote their free monthly electronics recycling program. The vendor for this event is COM2 Recycling Solutions. Residents can check their website at com2recycling.com for a list of electronics that are acceptable for drop-off.
