“On April 7, Westmont voters approved the Westmont Stormwater-Infrastructure Sales Tax Referendum,” says Mayor Ron Gunter. “Again, I’d like to reiterate that this entire process was initiated by concerned residents who stepped forward to be part of the solution. I want to sincerely thank everyone who was involved in this process.”
Now that the referendum has passed, the Village will make plans regarding the timeline for implementation. “As with any sales tax change, we will need to reach out to the business community and provide clear communication regarding the change and which products this will affect,” says Village Finance Director Spencer Parker. “This process will take a few months to coordinate, promote, and then implement the sales tax collection.” While collection of the sales tax is likely to start in 2015, physical work will most likely begin in 2016.
“I think this is an excellent opportunity for our community,” says Village Planning Engineer Kim Nicoll. “This will be the first time that our community has had a dedicated revenue source to address stormwater issues. Our consulting firm had identified over $30 million worth of projects, so we want to be deliberate and thoughtful in our approach to help ensure that issues are addressed in an efficient and cost-effective manner.”
Details regarding the future of Westmont’s Stormwater Management Program will be forthcoming. For additional information, contact the Village at info@westmont.il.gov or 630-417-2080.
