Village of Westmont
Date Issued: Nov. 16, 2015
Several police officials from Taiwan recently visited the Westmont Police Department to meet with members of the force and Village Staff. “We are honored to host delegates from Taiwan and show them our Police Department,” says Westmont Police Chief Tom Mulhearn. “We feel privileged that we were their second stop after meeting with President Obama in Chicago at the International Chiefs of Police Conference earlier in the day,” joked Mulhearn.
One of the Taiwanese Police Department officials, Deputy Director General Huang, is the second highest ranking police official in Taiwan. He complimented Chief Mulhearn and the Village of Westmont staff saying, “You remind me of Taiwanese people. Taiwanese people are very friendly, just like you.” Huang further commented that he was appreciative of everything the Westmont Police Department for all they do to keep Taiwanese citizens in our community safe. Huang also thanked Mulhearn for his hospitality and declared that this was his first Police Chief friendship in America.
The Taipai Economic Cultural Organization (TECO) cultural center, located at 55 E. 63rd Street, has worked with the Village of Westmont to create many cultural exchange opportunities between Westmont and the local Taiwanese population. Currently, the Village of Westmont and TECO are beginning conversations regarding the possibility of developing a sister city program.
