[ARCHIVED] Flagg Creek Encourages Fat-Free Sewers

Village of Westmont
Date Issued: June 6, 2016

Did you know that fats, oils, and grease (FOG) are the leading causes of residential and business sewer backups? It is estimated that 1 ounce of fat down your drain per day results in 23 pounds of fat in your storm sewer each year.

FOG can create serious health hazards, damage homes, and threaten the environment. Common sources of grease include food scraps, meat fats, baking goods, cooking oil, sauces, shortening, lard, dairy products, and more.

Flagg Creek Water Reclamation District recommends the following steps to create fat-free sewers and prevent backups:

* Never pour grease down sink drains or into toilets
* Scrape any grease from your cooking surfaces into a can or directly into the trash for disposal
* Do not put grease or grease sources down garbage disposals
* Talk to your neighbors about grease in the sewer system and how to keep it out
