Village of Westmont

At the Village Board meeting on Sept. 29, 2016, the Village of Westmont swore in James Gunther as the new Westmont Chief of Police. Gunther has been with the Westmont Police Department 1997 and served as Deputy Chief since 2010.
“We are excited to have Jim accept this new role,” said Mayor Ron Gunter. “I have had the opportunity to work closely with Jim over the last several years when he served as the Deputy Liquor Commissioner and I feel he has a good balance between leadership and the necessary people skills to perform this job. I look forward to working with Jim for years to come.”
At his swearing in ceremony, Jim joked with those in attendance confirming that there is no relation between between he and Mayor Gunter, saying, “We are separated by the letter ‘H’.” On a serious note, Gunther thanked everyone in attendance for their support and that he looks forward to serving in this new capacity.
Over the years, Gunther has served the Village of Westmont in a number of roles including: Patrol Officer, Detective, Acting Investigations Division Commander, Patrol Sergeant, Acting Deputy Chief of Administration, Patrol Sergeant, Investigations Division Commander, and Deputy Chief of Police. Jim’s education background includes Bachelor of Science in Law Enforcement Administration from Western Illinois University and a Master of Science in Criminal Social Justice from Lewis University as well as training received at the FBI National Academy in 2011.
Gunther has also received over a dozen special recognition awards and accomodations during his tenure in Westmont including the 2014 Public Safety Officer of the Year Award.
