The Westmont Lions Club will be celebrating their 11th year of the Red, White & Bar-B-Q (RWBBQ) festival this year. “We have something different every year,” said Chris Svitak, Event Coordinator & Lions Club member. “New this year, will is the appearance ot the ’2017 Great American Cookout Tour’ it will bring the art and taste of outdoor cooking to our contest. The RWBBQ will be one of 20 food festivals they will visit throughout the tour's seven months on the road. BBQ experts will share grilling tips and free samples with attendees, so bring your napkins and your appetite!”
Each year, the RWBBQ is held at the beautiful Ty Warner Park in Westmont over Memorial Day Weekend. This year’s event will begin on Friday, May 26 and end Sunday, May 28. The RWBBQ offers $16,000 in prize money making it the largest KCBS (Kansas City Barbeque Society) Bar-B-Q competition in Illinois and one of the biggest in the Midwest. The event includes both professional and amateur competitions.
Along with the competition, there will be an all-ages carnival, and various Bar-B-Q vendors. “We have even more Bar-B-Q vendors to choose from this year, as well as other new and interesting non-bbq food vendors” said Jenny Babyar, RWBBQ committee volunteer. “They will all offer bar-b-q sample sizes at reasonable prices all the way up to full slabs of ribs.”
The RWBBQ will feature several local bands like The Flat Cats with Jon Kostal from Uncle Jon’s music. “We always enjoy playing for Westmont,” said Kostal, who performs at various community events throughout the year including the Westmont Cruisin’ Nights and Street Fair, Taste of Westmont, and Westmont Holly Days.
