[ARCHIVED] Mayor Rahn Retirement

Village of Westmont
UPDATED: Jan. 18, 2013

Mayor William H. Rahn, known to the community as Mayor Bill, retired from the public office earlier this month after serving more than 30 years as an elected official. The notice comes just a few months prior to the 2013 spring election.

“As many people may know, I’ve been battling a variety of illnesses,” says Rahn, “and at this time when we will have newly elected officials transitioning into their positions, I've made the decision to spend more time with my family.”

“I have always felt that Westmont is a great place to live, work, shop, and raise a family,” says Rahn. “It has been my privilege to serve our residents in our goal of continually making improvements to the community in which we live. I am very thankful for the opportunities I have received to work with our citizens.” Bill adds, “Westmont residents are amazing volunteers - they are what makes our Village great.”

Family has always been a source of great pride and enjoyment for Bill. Bill and his wife Jill have been married for 40 years and raised three children: Peter, Heidi, and Danika. Peter completed Graduate School at Marquette University and is presently a Physical Therapist in Fort Atkinson, Wis. Heidi graduated from the University of Illinois and Loyola University Medical School and she is now in her residency at Northwestern. Danika graduated from Marquette University and is a nurse at Rush Hospital.

Bill Rahn was born and raised in Westmont. He has lived in Westmont for his entire life except for a few years during college and a short time after receiving his two masters degrees from Northern Illinois University in Special Education & Administration as well as Counseling. Bill also has a bachelor’s degree in Business & Marketing.

Rahn’s life in public service began as the volunteer chairperson for the Westmont Cable Television Committee in the 1980’s. Bill and the other commissioners were successful in negotiating the initial cable contract that not only brought cable TV service to the community, but also leveraged the creation of a state-of-the-art television production studio and related services to the Village of Westmont. This allowed Westmont to be one of the area leaders in using cable TV to record and playback government meetings. Rahn was a chairperson of the Planning & Zoning Commission and member of several other committees as well as an active member of the DuPage Mayor’s and Managers Conference.

Bill first ran for elected office in 1983 and was elected Village Trustee. Over the years, Bill served four terms as Trustee.

Rahn was elected to the position of Mayor in 1999 and continued in this position until his recent retirement in 2013. As Mayor, Rahn emphasized fiduciary responsibility and making sure the Village Government is run efficiently. Over the years, Bill has been a strong advocate of expanding community business development, maintaining quality programs and services for the community, and continuing family-friendly community events. These passions have led to close relationships with the Chamber of Commerce, Westmont Rotary, Westmont Lions, Westmont Special Events Corporation, and the Westmont Historical Society, with which he was a charter member.

The Village of Westmont congratulates Mayor Rahn on his retirement and thanks him for his many years of service and dedication to the community.
