Posted on: February 27, 2019[ARCHIVED] Westmont Police Internship Program Provides Opportunities for Future Law Enforcement Professionals

Westmont, Illinois
Date Issued: February 27, 2019
The Westmont Police Department has been participating in a student internship program for about 15 years. More than a dozen student interns have participated in the program and at least 5 of them have gone on to pursue a career in law enforcement.
“An internship provides a real-world law enforcement experience that cannot be obtained in a classroom,” said Westmont Chief of Police Jim Gunther. “We are heartened that the future members of the law enforcement community were positively influenced by the Westmont Police Department.”
Westmont Police Officer AJ Bennett had a three-month internship with the Westmont Police Department prior to being hired. The internship routine included daily ride-alongs with officers, observing the investigations division, assisting with the records division, and even helping out with special detail assignments such as the Taste of Westmont.
"An internship was required for my Law Enforcement and Justice Administration degree and I could think of no place better than my hometown of Westmont,” said Bennett. “I was accepted into their program and the experience solidified my belief that I wanted to be a police officer. I made some great friends during my internship and a few years later I was lucky enough to be hired by the Village of Westmont Police Department. I think it’s been a great fit."
