Posted on: March 18, 2019[ARCHIVED] Westmont Celebrates Arbor Day With Annual Tree Seedling Giveaway

To celebrate Arbor Day, the Westmont Environmental Improvement Commission (EIC) is coordinating its annual tree seedling giveaway. On Saturday, April 20, Village Forester Jon Yeater and EIC volunteers will be at the Westmont Library, 428 N. Cass Avenue from 1 to 5 p.m. to hand out tree seedlings to Westmont residents.
"Now that we are caught up replacing all the trees we lost to the Emerald Ash Borer, we can focus on beautifying the community,” said Yeater, who is the village liaison to the EIC. “With the help of the tree seedling giveaway, our citizens can help as well. This will be our 9th year giving out free tree seedlings."
The following tree species will be available for the 2019 seedling giveaway:
Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii)
Size - 40-60’ high by 15-20’ wide
Growth Rate - Medium-fast
Fall Color - Evergreen
Habit - Pyramidal
Maintenance Requirement - Low
Other - Good replacement for Blue Spruce
Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum)
Size - 40-60’ high by 30-60’ wide
Growth Rate - Medium-fast
Fall Color - Orange-yellow-red
Habit - Rounded
Maintenance Requirement - Medium
Other - Spectacular fall color
Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor)
Size - 50-60’ high by 50-60’ wide
Growth Rate - Medium
Fall Color - Yellow-green
Habit - Rounded
Maintenance Requirement - medium
Other - Great for wet areas
American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis)
Size - 60-80’ high by 40-80’ wide
Growth Rate - Medium-fast
Fall Color - Yellow-green
Habit - Rounded
Maintenance Requirement - Low
Other - Camouflage bark pattern
Residents can sign up online and choose the seedlings they would like to receive. Sign-up begins immediately and continues through Wednesday, April 17. All participants must be a resident of Westmont. Residents will be allowed to order up to two seedlings per Westmont address. To sign up click here:
