For the 23rd straight year, Westmont has been named Tree City USA in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
"Proper tree maintenance is important to the vitality and health of the trees, but also the safety of our residents,” said Village Forester Jon Yeater. “ A lot of pride is taken in our tree maintenance operations to ensure both of those goals are achieved."
Trees are assets to the community when properly planted and maintained. To encourage tree planting in the community, Westmont offers three programs for residents; the Parkway Tree Planting Program, the Tree Seedling Giveaway and the Fall Native Tree and Shrub Plant Sale. These programs promote planting with locally acclimated, long-lived, diverse tree species to increase the health and vitality of our urban forest. To celebrate Arbor Day, the Westmont Environmental Improvement Commission (EIC) is coordinating its annual tree seedling giveaway. On Saturday, April 20, Village Forester Jon Yeater and EIC volunteers will be at the Westmont Library to hand out tree seedlings to Westmont residents.
