[ARCHIVED] Westmont Declares State of Emergency

Village of Westmont
Date Issued: April 18, 2013
Updated: April 18, 6:30 p.m.

Due to the severity of the flooding issues over the past 24 hours, Mayor Pro Tem Sue Senicka has declared a State of Emergency in the Village of Westmont.

This declaration assists with the Village’s effort to communicate the extent of the damage of this situation to DuPage County as well as eventually seek State or Federal funding if and when it becomes available. Several other DuPage County communities have also declared a State of Emergency.

Following are some updates and safety tips regarding this situation:

STAY HOME
Due to the extensive flooding, residents, commuters and visitors are advised to avoid unnecessary travel. If conditions are safe at your home, then residents are encouraged to stay at home. The Westmont Police Department also advises of the dangers of attempting to drive or walk through standing or flood waters. Waters can vary in depth and current causing vehicles or people to be swept away.

SAFETY SHELTERS CLOSED
The Village of Westmont had opened three safety shelter locations for residents who may have been in need of safe shelter during the height of the storm incident. These shelters were then closed at 6:30 p.m. on April 18 due to a lack of need.

SANDBAGS AVAILABLE
A limited number of sandbags are available at the Westmont Public Works Department, 328 S. Wilmette. Sandbags are available now and will be handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis. Sandbags will be handed out up until 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, and during regular Public Works office hours on Friday, April 19.

MORE STORM SYSTEMS
The National Weather Service has indicated that more storm systems may be coming through later today. Residents are advised to stay home until flooding concerns have dissipated.

STREET CLOSURES
The Village of Westmont is developing a list of confirmed street closures where it is unsafe for vehicular traffic. This listing will be posted on the Village Website as soon as it becomes available.

Please check the Village Website, www.westmont.illinois.gov, for up to date information regarding this severe weather incident.
